The Associated Students of the University of Nevada’s Clubs and Organizations will cancel its second spring funding period because of a lack of money.

During a town hall meeting late Friday, Clubs and Organizations Director Nathan Demuth announced that fund allocation had reached its legal limit, thereby canceling the year’s final funding hearing.

This is the first time Clubs and Organizations has canceled a funding period, Demuth said.

Club leaders said they were surprised by the development.

Jacob Crawley, treasurer of the Lincoln Hall Association, said the cancellation could prevent his club from holding an annual event they’ve been planning.

“There are a lot of people who are shocked,” he said.

The cancelation will make for a less productive Anchor Splash, an annual event held by Delta Gamma Sorority, president Ariana Harrison said.

Covering the costs of the event, which includes renting a pool, will leave the sorority with fewer dollars to donate to vision health organizations for which the event is held.

Funding requests have increased exponentially since 2006, Demuth said. Clubs and Organization heard 86 requests and allocated $128,705 during the 2006-2007 school year, he said. During the past three funding periods this school year, Clubs and Organizations heard 416 requests and allocated $222,930.

At the meeting, Demuth promised to hold an emergency funding hearing after the first spring funding period if the Clubs and Organizations account maintains a balance. The period ends April 13.

The fact that clubs don’t always spend all the money they are awarded often confounds accurate balance predictions, Demuth said. New penalties for clubs that don’t spend allocated funds will be imposed in the future, he said.

Demuth is not violating ASUN code by canceling funding. Code requires at least three funding hearings during the school year.

Maybe it’s time to do away with club funding entirely. Benefits tiny numbers of students. Just a money hole.

I think there needs to be more emphasis on what is being funded and what is not. Some of the events that are funded are garbage. A complete waste as Sean has stated. But there is a need for events that help not just one or two departments but the school as a whole. I am not interested in Greek events. They have the man-power and should have the motivation to go out and get their events funded through other means. Clubs based on the school that have a direct tie to their departments could use the funding and should get priority. I heard about an event in planning called the “Exercise is Medicine Week” which is part of an initiative from the American College of Sports Medicine to get campuses throughout the country more active and educated about the benefits of exercise in late April. I heard that they were looking to challenge our campus to how many calories we could burn in a week while getting other clubs (ultimate frisbee, akido, ball room dancing, apple poppers, resident halls, greeks, lombardi, etc.) involved with this program. I see that as a worthwhile event to fund. Not exclusive to one students department but open to all students because there is no pill, medical procedure or diet that does brings more health benefits to an individual than exercise. That is something this school could use and should have been funded.
