State to decide budget


Lawmakers said to expect solutions for Nevada's $2 billion-plus shortfall to come during the next four-month period. Monday marked the beginning of the state legislature's 2009 session. They will meet in Carson City for the next 120 days to address the shortfall and other problems such as the housing crisis and the rising unemployment rate.

State cuts millions more from higher ed


The state legislature unanimously approved a plan that shifts money from state accounts into the general state fund during Monday's special session. For higher education, that means $5 million less in the Millennium Scholarship account and up to $2.5 million less for a higher education capital construction account.

LAS VEGAS - Board of Regents Chair Michael Wixom announced Friday morning that the board would hold a special meeting about the budget shortfall next week, postponing the discussion for a second time. The meeting will include discussion of a suggested tuition increase at Nevada System of Higher Education institutions, including the University of Nevada, Reno.

LAS VEGAS - A sea of students from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas protested possible tuition increase at Thursday's Board of Regents meeting and pledged to continue fighting the possibility.

25 percent tuition increase unlikely


Higher education officials said a tuition increase for next semester is unlikely, but wouldn't rule out the possibility of future increases as Nevada's budget shortfall continues. After Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Jim Rogers said a 25 percent fee increase for students at the University of Nevada, Reno would raise $50 million for the system, students planned petitions and protests.

Glick answers budget questions in town hall


The University of Nevada, Reno still needs to cut another $10 million from next year's budget to deal with projected deficits, university officials said in a town hall meeting Monday. UNR President Milton Glick, Provost Marc Johnson and other officials used the town hall to explain the state of the university's budget during a national economic recession and the highest budget shortfall in state history.

Jury deliberation begins in Halloween triple-murder trial


In closing arguments Wednesday, a prosecutor argued for first-degree murder charges against Samisone Taukitoku while Taukitoku's lawyer said her client had acted in self-defense. Jury deliberation began in the murder trial of the 20-year-old Reno resident accused of killing three men, including university student Derek Jensen, at a 2007 Halloween party.

Historic youth vote turnout buoyed Barack Obama’s win


Despite a high youth turnout last Tuesday, some political experts are wondering if the youth will remain politically active or just become a blip at the voting booth. Eric Herzik, a political science professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, said the spike in interest was due to a well-run campaign by President-elect Barack Obama. According to a CNN exit poll, 68 percent of young voters chose Obama, while 30 percent chose Se. John McCain.

Prosecution set to finish tomorrow in Halloween ‘07 murder trial


Uto Lomano gave an “uncomfortable” testimony Thursday, in which he affirmed that he watched a man he calls his uncle shoot two men several times. Lomano, 17, answered mostly in “yeah”s or “no”s in his testimony against Samisoni Taukitoku, the man accused of shooting three people to death at a Halloween party last year.

$31 million decisions

Local elections important but often ignored


Nevada's voters may be focused on which presidential ticket they will vote for come Election Day, but political experts said voters need to remember the importance of state and local races this year. “You see voters come in every four years, and they vote for president and Congress, but they won't vote for the state legislature,” said Kenneth Fernandez, a political science professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Cowboy poets come to Reno


Reno residents will get a taste for the American West when the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering comes to the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts Oct. 28. The event, which has been a part of Elko's performing arts scene for the last 25 years, will feature Polish rodeo poet Paul Zarzyski, yodeler Wylie Gustafson and his band Wylie & The Wild West.
