It’s true, isn’t it? No one wants to be “that guy” who is responsible for killing off the earth.

I worked as a news reporter this summer and covered a variety of general news assignments, through which I met and talked with different people every day.

In response to recent efforts to ban alcohol at football games, I spent sleepless nights wondering how to convince my fellow students of the righteousness of this act. History, I realized, was the best consultant.

krystalbick.jpgFree.

Everybody loves that word. Buy two, get one free. Tax-free. Worry-free. Our very country rests on principles of such a word that is small yet worth dying for.

But what is it that people best love about this notion of free? Is it the freedom to vote for whomever I see fit? Maybe it’s the cable that somehow got “rerouted” to your house that your neighbors are unknowingly sharing with you? Or perhaps the freedom to write random ramblings and pawn them off as opinion columns?

Krystal BickBarack Obama has been said to be not black enough to be president.

It’s been said that Hillary Clinton isn’t feminine enough to be taken seriously.

And then there’s John Edwards. Poor Caucasian male. He wasn’t different enough to be in this race.

As the caucuses have come, gone and continued to other parts of the country, I’ve already become disenchanted with the presidential race — and there’s still a grueling nine months ahead of me to endure.

Krystal BickNext stop, the Apple store. Now, anyone who’s ever been inside this technology haven knows there’s a certain etiquette to shopping here.

First, the blackly-dressed, yuppie-esque sales associate who strangely looks like the Apple guy from the commercials knows an unsettling amount of information about Macintoshes. Listen to him, but don’t join alliances with him. Underneath his perfected messy bed head, I imagine he’s strategizing the war between Mac and PC people.

krystalbick2.jpg Walking to class has gotten quite dangerous these days. It has nothing to do with passionate Democrats or Republicans bombarding me to convince me of their righteousness or the screeching Christian dude in front of the library telling me that I’m destined for hell. Instead, the university has graced us with little cars for maintenance employees to drive.

Oh joy.

Seemingly harmless, right? Wrong. As I’m minding my business and heading to class, I find that I have to check both directions on walkways. Why? It’s not like this is South Virginia Street or the Sierra Street crosswalk where students have been hit before. This is a university campus. Not Interstate 80.

krystalbick2.jpg Scheduling conflicts happen to me every registration period. It’s like my teachers purposely meet and schedule classes with 15-minute overlaps just to see me squirm. It’s that time of year again – class registration. I love whipping out the spring catalogues and signing up with advisors who are probably just as confused as I am over my DARS report, which, going on my fourth year here, I’m still not even that sure what DARS stands for. There’s just one problem. My Monday and Wednesday 11 a.m. class conflicts with everything else I need to sign up for. Sorry, Glick, looks like I’m not graduating in four years.

To the person who recently lost mine and 16,000 other students’ personal information on a USB drive: No hard feelings, all right? I’m sure by this point, if you haven’t already left the country, you’re probably hanging your head. That’s understandable. I would, too. But if you happen to not be enjoying the back country of Mexico with Juan, your personal driver, I want to bestow some advice and encouragement for you (from one forgetful person to another). Because someone brilliant once said that to err is human even when identity theft is at stake – or something like that.

In “American Gangster,” Academy Award winner Denzel Washington plays a ruthless mobster, who is just as hard to hate as his do-gooder characters in “Remember the Titans” and “Man on Fire.”
