My biggest graduation-related fear is that I’ll end up somewhere without the healthy drinking culture of Reno.
Saturday, for example, hosted the Beer Crawl, Canfest and whiskey tasting, presenting an inverse Sophie’s Choice of booze. Having a penchant for bourbon, however, the choice was fairly clear for me.

The University of Nevada, Reno Police Department must rehire a police sergeant who is seeking a grand jury investigation into corruption at the university and suing multiple officials in the police department, a state hearing officer ruled Friday.
Sgt. Lane Grow was fired in May after being arrested and charged with four misdemeanor vehicle registration violations. Grow said the hearing officer reinstated him with full back pay and benefits in part because those four violations, coupled with a clean personnel file, didn’t warrant outright dismissal.

A transformer blew on Timber Way, less than a mile from campus, cutting power to most of the University of Nevada, Reno on Wednesday at about 6 p.m., firefighters said. Since the Nevada State Legislature decided on a 12.5 percent cut of state funding for the state's higher education system this summer, UNR has cut more than 200 class sections and increased class sizes by 50 students in some courses. With the declining economy and the state budget shortfall, professors and administrators doubt class sizes will shrink in the near future, though there's no official way to be sure.

The University of Nevada, Reno's research programs, among the best in the country, won't be adversely impacted by recent cuts to the school, researchers and administrators said.
The university's research, ranked 44th for quality among American public institutions in a yearly study performed by the Center for Measuring Research Performance, is also among the most efficient in the nation. Only three schools in the top 50 spent less money on research than UNR, and the university ranked 135th in total research-related expenditures.
