As he drags his legs, crooked and bent inward at the knees, Jeremiah Frank slowly pounds his canes into the sidewalk for support. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth, Frank struggles to walk to his University of Nevada, Reno classes. At “the campus on the hill,” Frank battles stairs, narrow walkways and lengthy routes to accessible entrances.

The solar panel system on top of the Joe Crowley Student Union is now running at full capacity. About 30 kilowatts generated by the 112 solar panels provides electricity to the Associated Students of the University of Nevada Bookstore inside The Joe.

When The Joe was in the early stages of design and planning in 2004, students promoted several projects to improve the quality of the campus. One was to implement a photovoltaic (PV) system, or solar panels, within The Joe.

Some students recently questioned the university’s reason for offering remedial classes while facing budget cuts of up to 14 percent. Administrators said tuition from students enrolled in the classes pays for the courses in their entirety.

“Students are paying for remedial classes,” Provost Marc Johnson said. “It’s not coming out of our budget.”

The Board of Regents are meeting Thursday and Friday at the Desert Research Institute in Las Vegas. They will decide a variety of topics affecting the University of Nevda, Reno and the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Chancellor Jim Rogers, who has served as a voice against state budget cuts this past year, said he won’t seek the renewal of his five-year contract with the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Rogers’s contract ends June 30.

University officials are looking to make an additional $16.7 million in budget cuts for next year. Provost Marc Johnson said he contacted the college deans Friday and Monday, asking them to look for programs that can be cut and ways to save money in their individual schools.
