The Associated Students of the University of Nevada Judicial Council decided Friday the executive branch did not overstep its bounds in creating a free tutoring program. The case questioned the constitutionality of the way the board was created.

Critics say the senate is not producing legislation at the rate it should and the senators have a misunderstanding of the rules. The senate gave $23,821 out of the ASUN budget, which is supported by a student fee, to pay the salaries of the 22 senators.

Student Organizations as Academic Resources (SOAR) will have its first tutoring sessions Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday starting at 5 p.m. in the Joe Crowley Student Union.
They will be part of the 24-Hour Study Hall at The Joe. Movies, an oxygen bar, massage therapists, yoga instructors and free prizes will also be available at the study hall.

In the senate’s recent history, Chelsey and Ian McMenemy are the only brother-sister pair of senators to serve at the same time. Being senators is hardly the only thing the two have in common, though. They grew up sharing the same birthday and a desire to get involved in their community.

The University of Nevada, Reno’s chapter of the National Organization for Women Campus Action Network (NOW CAN) works to educate students about gender inequality and female representation in society. Since starting in October, NOW CAN addressed issues such as violence against women, a woman’s choice to have an abortion, gender discrimination and economic injustice.

The student senate passed a resolution Wednesday night against a proposed tuition increase. The Board of Regents will discuss the increase at their meeting this week. The resolution, originally written by former senator Taylor R. Anderson and sponsored by Sens. Priscilla Acosta and Jennifer Richards underwent many amendments before being passed.

Higher education officials said a tuition increase for next semester is unlikely, but wouldn’t rule out the possibility of future increases as Nevada’s budget shortfall continues.

After Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Jim Rogers said a 25 percent fee increase for students at the University of Nevada, Reno would raise $50 million for the system, students planned petitions and protests.

Roshaun Dauphine had just started her 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. shift at Campus Escort when the calls from a drunken male started. He would call about 20 times within 45 minutes and scream vulgarities at Dauphine and into Campus Escort’s voicemail.

Members of any campus club or organization are eligible to help tutor before final exams. Sessions will run from 3 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 10, 11 and 14.

On Dec. 10 students can help children in Ethiopia by designing their own shoes as part of an event, “Style Your Soles.”

Flipside Productions and TOMS Shoes will host the event. TOMS Shoes is a Santa Monica-based shoe company that is working to donate shoes to children in need, in order to prevent a common serious disease.

A ruling is pending in the case of Anderson vs. Entsminger after the student judicial council heard the case Thursday night. The charge was filed because former student senator Taylor Anderson believes the free tutoring program, SOAR, was created illegally.

University officials, regents and legislators said if students don’t speak up, the cuts could be even more detrimental. Several state programs are fighting for money and if one group is more visibly against cuts, that group will get more money, they said.

The student senate passed a resolution 14-3 Wednesday expressing support for Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Jim Rogers.
When discussion started about whether to send a copy of the resolution to Gibbons the senate’s first heated debate of the year ensued.
