College hopes put in place for daughter

I often visit the Web site PostSecret.com, where people creatively and anonymously announce their secrets to the world. One recently stuck out at me: “The only thing I’ve learned from my Ivy League education is how many things in my life are more important than this.”

The event's proceeds will go to the BSO club.

Stores to open by fall

Keva Kéva Juice and Starbucks will be joined by sandwich shop Port of Subs Tuesday, Chuck Price, the director of the Joe Crowley Student Union said. “All the shops should be open by next fall,” Price said Port of Subs opened two months after the grand opening of the union. Price said shops opening after the grand opening is a good thing. “As traffic patterns develop, more places will open up,” he said.

Nov. 13, 2007 – Sagebrush staffers talk about The Joe

Sagebrush staffers talk about The Joe. When it’s open (now, but the grand opening is Thursday), how much it costs (63 million), and what kind of food isn’t there…yet (Italian-pizza concept?). [display_podcast] Related Posts:No Related Posts

The Joe opens to high anticipation

After six years of discussion, plans and construction, the Joe Crowley Student Union opened its doors Nov. 5 to the public, with grand opening ceremonies planned for Thursday and Friday. While furniture was moved in and people unpacked boxes in their new offices, Price said the challenge for the coming year will be figuring out how to keep the building operating and working for students.

Food venues not open for business until spring

Some students might be surprised when they enter the Joe Crowley Student Union during its grand opening and find their only food option will be a muffin from Starbucks or a bag of chips from the convenience store. Chuck Price, director of The Joe, said it be a while until the food vendors in the union will be open and serving students.

Nader to speak about going green at grand opening

“Going green” will be the topic of political activist Ralph Nader's speech during The Joe's grand opening ceremonies. He will speak at 6 p.m. Thursday. Nader, who helped found the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, will focus on environmental issues such as global warming, Flipside programmer Tim Taycher said. There will be a question-and-answer session after Nader's lecture, which will be held in The Joe grand ballroom on the fourth floor of The Joe.

Find your way around The Joe

Until last week, the Center for Cultural Student Diversity was in the basement of Juniper Hall. Now it's the heart of the Joe Crowley Student Union, smack-dab in the middle of the $63 million building that has its grand opening Nov. 15. “What we're excited about is all the students who were never on that end of campus who just wouldn't know to check the bottom level of a dorm,” said the center's director Reg Stewart. The Joe revolves around a simple theory, said student union director Chuck Price: Give students what they need in one place to keep them on campus. That means more retail. More amenities. And more lounge space. And The Joe has – or will have – all of the above, Price said.

Union conserves resources

The tiny little Nevadas imprinted across the windows of the Joe Crowley Student Union may seem like they are there just for looks, but they also reflect 40 percent of incoming heat from the sun. The Joe is the most environmental-friendly building on campus John Sagebiel, manager of environmental affairs, said. There is not just one huge feature that makes the student union a greener building, but a lot of little factors working together.

Group sows ‘SEEDS’ for greener campus

Saving money and resources by taking advantage of environment-friendly strategies may seem like a simple choice to most people. But one of the founding members of Students and Educators for Environmental Development and Sustainability (SEEDS), Kurt Unger, said they had to push pretty hard to get green concepts incorporated into the Joe Crowley Student Union.

Furniture brings unique touches

The outside walls of the Joe Crowley Student Union are the same color as the nearby Sierra Nevada Mountains and that is no coincidence, architects said. “Bringing the Sierra Mountains indoors was the theme of the building,” said Sarah Ragsdale, Associated Students of the University of Nevada, Reno president. The Joe was designed to be personal and unique to the University of Nevada, Reno, said Rich Bamborak, the senior principal at WTW Architect. Bamborak said incorporating the mountains and a natural feel to the building was a part of that concept.

Little details emphasize school pride

From the carpet to the ceiling, designers of the Joe Crowley Student Union enhanced the building with school pride, designer Jennifer Bahmiller said. Bahmiller said designers purposely designed blue and silver furniture, and painted certain walls blue and silver to enhance school pride.
