End of an era: Nevada set to jump to MWC after historic run in WAC

All of 54 days separate Nevada’s storied history in the Western Athletic Conference from its bright future in the Mountain West Conference. For the past 12 years playing in the WAC, the Wolf Pack has dazzled fans with championship performances, intense rivalries, Cinderella runs in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, nail-biting victories and everything in between.

Darby sees rise and fall

Dominating, successful, exciting: These are the words attributed to the legendary “Fab Five.” No, not the “Fab Five” of University of Michigan men’s basketball lore, the Fab Five of Spanish Springs High School Softball, circa 2008. A team on which Mallary Darby, the team’s most explosive player, played the role of Chris Webber. Winning back-to-back state titles (at Spanish Springs) would make some athletes complacent. But not Darby her passion for the game has only grown stronger since joining the Wolf Pack in 2009.

Reporter role made me a man

When I was a sophomore in 2008, I remember being at Wolf Pack Park waiting to do pre-practice interviews with some Nevada football players. As the players slowly made their way onto the field from the locker room, I waited anxiously for former wide receiver Marko Mitchell to come out so I could speak with him for a story I was working on.

Top-5 things to look forward to for the Pack in 2012

With finals fast approaching, this last weekend was going to be the time where I was going to turn off SportsCenter, log out of ESPN and hit the books. All of that went unsuccessfully as I found myself thinking of this last year of Nevada sports and the joys it brought. I also found myself thinking about next year and what lies ahead for the Wolf Pack. I narrowed it down to five things:

Tourney next for softball squad

It was a weekend full of firsts and lasts for the Nevada softball team. It was the last time the team’s seniors — Mallary Darby, Alex Arciniega and Kortnee Wiley — sported white and blue for the Wolf Pack at Hixson Park. The trio’s farewell didn’t go as planned as Nevada was swept by a Western Athletic Conference foe for the first time all season.

Third-place Pack nears end of season

The Nevada baseball team had the weekend off from Western Athletic Conference play, but its weekend was no walk in the park.

A look back at six Nevada sports teams’ run through the Western Athletic Conference

We went back through the record books and aggregated statistics for six select Wolf Pack sports (football, soccer, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, softball and baseball) starting from when the University of Nevada, Reno joined the Western Athletic Conference in 2000 up until now. The sports were chosen in a systematic way so as to represent [...]

Family ties

Finding place in star-filled families has come differently for Pack stars.

Lacrosse club preps for playoffs

A snapped stick, a smashed racket and broken PlayStation controllers all are casualties of losing your cool. It happens to all of us and can severely affect your performance in all areas of life. But for the Wolf Pack men’s lacrosse club, finding a way to channel this negative energy into something positive will ultimately determine how its season will turn out.

Nevada clinches first tourney berth since ’09

Mallary Darby was on the mound the last time Nevada played in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament three years ago. On Friday, Darby pitched a complete-game five-hitter to clinch a return to the WAC Tournament for the Wolf Pack. The playoff berth marks a big turnaround from the past two seasons, where Nevada finished dead last in the WAC both seasons with a combined league record of 8-33.

Baseball: Pack moves into 2nd place

With only two conference series left in the season before the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, this weekend’s series against Fresno State was a must-win for the Wolf Pack baseball team. Thanks to some clutch hitting and a strong starting pitching rotation, Nevada took two games out of three from the Bulldogs and moved to second place in the WAC standings.

Four Nevadans taken in NFL Draft

A school-record four former Nevada athletes were taken in last weekend’s NFL Draft, led by linebacker James-Michael Johnson, who was selected in the fourth round by the Cleveland Browns.

Briefs: May 1st, 2012

Rumors are swirling that could change the landscape of the Western Athletic Conference. Utah State and San Jose State are headed to the Mountain West Conference in 2013, according to a report by the Salt Lake Tribune.

Fountain is involved in two frats as well as sports club

Between meeting term paper deadlines, making new friends, recovering from Friday nights and cramming for finals, the life of a college student can be pretty hectic. Learning how to manage your time and figuring what to do is critical to your success. For University of Nevada, Reno senior Colby Fountain, a difficult schedule with life lessons to be learned along the way is what he wakes up to everyday — and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Parenting techniques differ when it comes to athletes

This week, I worked on a story on Lauren Lastrapes (see B1), a junior infielder on the Nevada softball team. The angle was to find out whether she felt the pressure of having two older sisters who have had incredible success in softball (Brittany played on U.S. National team and Dominique played four years at the University of Washington before becoming a coach at the University of California, Davis). I quickly found out the answer was no. But to a T, all three women gave me similar responses: We all supported each other in all aspects of life because we received enough pressure from our dad.

Nevada seeks nominations for athletics hall of fame

The University of Nevada is currently seeking nominations for induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012.

DB James dismissed from Pack football team

Wolf Pack cornerback Malik James has been dismissed from the Nevada football team for a violation of team rules, head coach Chris Ault announced Sunday.

NFL Draft 2012: Final predictions

The 2012 NFL Draft first round came and went without many surprises to Nevada — no former Wolf Pack player was drafted.
