Third-place Pack nears end of season

The Nevada baseball team had the weekend off from Western Athletic Conference play, but its weekend was no walk in the park.

A look back at six Nevada sports teams’ run through the Western Athletic Conference

We went back through the record books and aggregated statistics for six select Wolf Pack sports (football, soccer, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, softball and baseball) starting from when the University of Nevada, Reno joined the Western Athletic Conference in 2000 up until now. The sports were chosen in a systematic way so as to represent [...]

Baseball: Pack moves into 2nd place

With only two conference series left in the season before the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, this weekend’s series against Fresno State was a must-win for the Wolf Pack baseball team. Thanks to some clutch hitting and a strong starting pitching rotation, Nevada took two games out of three from the Bulldogs and moved to second place in the WAC standings.

Baseball attendance lags, dips to one-third of early 2000 numbers

With only nine home games left this season, the Wolf Pack is averaging only 430 people per game. This is nothing new to the Wolf Pack however, since the attendance has been dropping significantly since 2005. From 2000-2005 the average attendance at a baseball home game ranged from 1,148 per game in 2005 to as high as 1,365 in 2000.

Powers wins 900th, Pack sits fourth in conference

Thirty-nine games into the season and the Wolf Pack baseball team still can’t find consistency in many areas. The pitching rotation has been up and down, the offense has been in and out of synch, and the defense has been erratic. Last weekend’s series against conference foe Sacramento State only proved that inconsistency.

30 seasons later, Powers hits 900-win milestone

With a strikeout from Nevada pitcher Jayson McClaren to sit down a University of San Francisco pitcher, Wolf Pack head coach Gary Powers won his 900th career game -- all at Nevada.

Nevada bucks La. Tech, Powers wins game No. 899

Coming off a four-game losing streak and going into a home series against Louisiana Tech, all the Nevada baseball team wanted to do was win. It accomplished that goal in dramatic fashion by gaining its first three-game sweep of the season and picking up win No. 899 for head coach Gary Powers in the process.

Series preview: Pack hopes to lead WAC with Hornets defeat

After sweeping by Louisiana Tech, the Nevada baseball team has won four out of its last six conference games. The team is now set on the upcoming series at Sacramento State.

Bad beats making Nevada baseball edgy

It was the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday and New Mexico State’s winning run was on third base. Nevada had earned two outs and just one more strike would have ended the game and the series as a win for Nevada. The Aggies hitter pelted a grounder to senior Wolf Pack infielder Joe Kohan, [...]

Beyond fundamentals of Nevada baseball

The stare-down between a hitter and a pitcher is an epic moment in sports. Add a cloudy day’s dim lighting, rain dripping off junior Nevada batter Brooks Klein’s helmet and the dry eyes of Brigham Young University pitcher Desmond Poulson facing a headwind, and it’s a theatrical stage. A drenched BYU pitcher still had a [...]

Center fielder keeping focused

The chief of the Wolf Pack’s outfield, junior centerfielder Jamison Rowe exposed his sporting personality at a young age and in an unlikely place. It wasn’t when he made it to the Little League World Series at the age of 12 on ESPN in front of 12,000 fans or to the American Legion World Series Championship during high school. It didn’t even come on a baseball field. It was on a soccer pitch at the age of 7, where he scored seven times in a single match, according to his father Mark Rowe. The opposing team’s parents pleaded with his son’s head coach to take the speedy midfielder out of the game.

Nevada travels to nation’s top offense

Pack to face New Mexico State, which averages 10 runs per game, in first WAC series of the season. For the most part, out-of-conference play is in the Nevada baseball team’s rearview mirror now. With 19 of the Wolf Pack’s 27 remaining games being Western Athletic Conference contests, the team should be able to hone [...]

Column: One community, one Pack?

Poor attendance at baseball games reflects poorly on students Last week, I was listening to an interview with old Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda on ESPN Radio. As a San Francisco Giants fan, I usually ignore any sort of Dodger news, but something he said before I could change the station caught my attention. [...]

Senior closer saves his pitching career from adversity, injury

From getting in trouble with umpires to Tommy John surgery and to tying Nevada baseball records, there hasn’t been much senior relief pitcher Matt Gardner hasn’t experienced in his eight-year baseball career.

Nevada looks for pace before WAC

After a season-high, four-game losing skid, the Wolf Pack has rebounded with back-to-back wins against Loyola Marymount. True to form, Nevada used strong pitching in both wins.

Pitcher spot is hot for the Wolf Pack

No collegiate athlete likes being beat out for the starting spot, especially when it’s an underclassman getting the promotion. Nevada fans saw it last season as the Wolf Pack football team veered from the senior leadership of quarterback Tyler Lantrip to entrust the team’s fate in then-redshirt freshman Cody Fajardo, and Nevada baseball is doing [...]

High-scoring series sees Pack end on top

It was offense galore between Nevada and University of California, Santa Barbara baseball teams last weekend at home in Peccole Park. The two teams combined for 50 runs during the three-game series. The Wolf Pack’s bats carried them to a 2-1 series win. Nevada improved to 9-6 on the season. “I’m happy for our team [...]
