Darby sees rise and fall

Dominating, successful, exciting: These are the words attributed to the legendary “Fab Five.” No, not the “Fab Five” of University of Michigan men’s basketball lore, the Fab Five of Spanish Springs High School Softball, circa 2008. A team on which Mallary Darby, the team’s most explosive player, played the role of Chris Webber. Winning back-to-back state titles (at Spanish Springs) would make some athletes complacent. But not Darby her passion for the game has only grown stronger since joining the Wolf Pack in 2009.

Tourney next for softball squad

It was a weekend full of firsts and lasts for the Nevada softball team. It was the last time the team’s seniors — Mallary Darby, Alex Arciniega and Kortnee Wiley — sported white and blue for the Wolf Pack at Hixson Park. The trio’s farewell didn’t go as planned as Nevada was swept by a Western Athletic Conference foe for the first time all season.

A look back at six Nevada sports teams’ run through the Western Athletic Conference

We went back through the record books and aggregated statistics for six select Wolf Pack sports (football, soccer, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, softball and baseball) starting from when the University of Nevada, Reno joined the Western Athletic Conference in 2000 up until now. The sports were chosen in a systematic way so as to represent [...]

Nevada clinches first tourney berth since ’09

Mallary Darby was on the mound the last time Nevada played in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament three years ago. On Friday, Darby pitched a complete-game five-hitter to clinch a return to the WAC Tournament for the Wolf Pack. The playoff berth marks a big turnaround from the past two seasons, where Nevada finished dead last in the WAC both seasons with a combined league record of 8-33.

Darby leads team to win over No. 14 Hawaii

Facing arguably the Western Athletic Conference’s best pitcher, Stephanie Ricketts, Mallary Darby pitched like the ace. Darby, a senior for the Nevada softball team, threw a complete-game shutout to lead the Wolf Pack to a 4-0 upset over No. 14 Hawaii on Saturday.

Softball: Comeback wins put Pack in fourth place

Another game, another deficit and another come-from-behind win for Nevada’s softball team.

Column: Straightforward softball truths

In a season defined by up-and-down moments, Nevada softball’s 10-0 beatdown at the hands of San Jose State University might have been rock bottom. The Wolf Pack’s miserable three-run scoring output during its series against the Spartans was a bad case of déjà vu; reminiscent of the start to Nevada’s season when it was shut [...]

Sixteen inches of scar tissue later

At first, she attributed the pain to the effects of a long season with few breaks and many hours of practice. The wear and tear was simply catching up to her. Nevada softball player Jayme King would routinely run around the base pads, snag down a fly ball in left field, run out a ground [...]

Column: Bad luck Pack

A 9-22 record for the Wolf Pack softball team certainly isn’t turning any heads, but Nevada is better than its mark indicates.

Softball starts league play with win over Fresno, top dogs

The Nevada softball team’s opening Western Athletic Conference series against Fresno State at Hixson Park seemed like a rehash of the whole season.

Hopkins is tough, fan favorite

Chants of “Pee Wee” rang across Hixson Park from fans and Nevada players alike as sophomore shortstop Karley Hopkins was at-bat against San Diego on Saturday. Opposite of Hopkins towered the opposing pitcher. With the count full and the bases loaded as Nevada clung to a one-run lead, the noise deafened and the pressure mounted. [...]

Softball goes 3-5 as league play looms

The Nevada softball team’s strength became its weakness during an eight-game home stretch last week. After relying on strong pitching throughout the season, the Wolf Pack surrendered 60 runs as it went 3-5 during the home stand (7.5 runs per game). By comparison, the Wolf Pack had allowed 90 runs in 20 games prior to [...]

Pattern emerging for 5-15 Wolf Pack

Losing close games is becoming a trend for the Nevada softball team. No strangers to late-game heartbreaks this season, Nevada added three more one-run losses (6-5, 2-1, 4-3) last weekend at the San Diego Classic.

Wolf Pack struggles through difficult week

Nevada junior right fielder Megan Fincher screamed and fist pumped down the first base baseline in celebration after ripping a single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Wolf Pack over San Diego 3-2 Saturday in the Gaucho Classic in Santa Barbara, Calif. “Our assistant coach Andy (Dominique) told me, ‘Stay confident, [...]

Softball shows brilliant flashes at Stanford

Nine games into the season, one thing can be said about the Nevada softball team: It’s consistently inconsistent. By losing multiple leads and committing sloppy errors, the Wolf Pack looked poor at times. At other times, it showed flashes of brilliance, such as beating a top-10 team in the nation at the Stanford Nike Invitational. [...]

It’s only up from here for Nevada

One of the first teams I covered all season when I was a freshman was the softball team. Back then, the team was in the midst of a 40-19 season that ended with a regular-season championship and a trip to the NCAA super regionals. That was head coach Matt Meuchel’s first season at the helm of Nevada softball. Since then? They’ve gone 30-64 and 8-33 in Western Athletic Conference play. In one season, they went from first place to last, missing out on the WAC Tournament.

Softball team slams Eagles in exhibitions

What better way for the Nevada softball team to gain some confidence going into the upcoming season than by dominating an inferior team? Saturday’s exhibition double-header against Feather River College was just that — a confidence booster and a way to work some kinks out for the approaching season.
