Undie run encourages clothing donations


The Undie Run, an annual Flipside event that consists of taking off clothes and running around campus, won’t be focused on stripping down this year. Instead, organizers want students to realize the charity aspect of the event, Stephanie Maddox, the Flipside philanthropy chairperson, said.

Blurring gender for sense of self


The term transsexual woman fits 33-year-old student Corinna Cohn, but her identity goes deeper than what her body shows. “I want to be considered as somebody who is an economist, somebody who is libertarian and conservative in principle. Somebody who is smart. Somebody who’s friendly,” Cohn, who plans to graduate later this month, said. “I’m kind of nerdy ... I really dig politics … I think that makes a lot more of who my identity is than what is or isn’t between my legs.”

QSU aims for campus acceptance


For more than 20 years, the Queer Student Union has provided its members a safe place to meet and discuss issues they face or simply to express themselves without fear of judgment or reprisal. For many years, that was its only purpose. Recently, however, the group has become more visible on campus, a move many say is taking the club in the right direction.

Swine flu crisis forces program to end early


Some students from the University of Nevada, Reno returned home from their study abroad program in Puebla, Mexico 10 days early after the swine flu outbreak last week. When the Mexican government decided to close schools April 28 through May 6 in order to prevent further spread of the swine flu, University Study Abroad Consortium ended the program prematurely but gave students the option to stay in Mexico or return to the United States. After the term was concluded, 22 students, two from UNR, returned home early.

STAND simulates refugee camp to protest genocide


Students involved in STAND, a student anti-genocide coalition, hosted a demonstration Monday on the Quad in order to raise awareness about genocides in areas such as Darfur and East Burma.

Study: Caffeine helps recollection


Researchers said this supports that drinking energy drinks before studying is ineffective. But caffeine could help with recalling something already learned, which means that students are likely to perform better if they consume an energy drink before an exam, according to the research.

Language program helps foreign students


The Intensive English Language Center, aiming to teach foreign students about the English language and American culture, created the Conversation Partner Program to pair English students with native speakers. “It is a year-long program that was created in 1999,” Kendee Franklin, the marketing director for the IELC, said. “It’s been going on different levels of activity throughout the years because we’ve been crafting the program to see what works best for students. We are sort of remarketing the program.”

Student, in remission for 20 years, volunteers to help other patients


Felicia Krouse went in remission almost two decades ago. The 20-year-old dual education major was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, the most common cancer in infancy, when she was two months old. Despite going into remission at 11-months-old, she said her short-lived battle with cancer still affects her today.

Beer pong tourney to attract thousands


The biggest beer pong tournament in the world is being planned by four University of Nevada, Reno students. The tournament will feature 1,000 teams of two players each from all over the West Coast with the winners walking away with $10,000. The tournament will take place Aug. 11 to 13 at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino.

Earth Day events to raise ‘green’ awareness


The University of Nevada, Reno Environmental Action Team and Academy for the Environment are educating students on how to make the principles of environmentalism part of daily routine with their annual Earth Day celebration.

UNR advertisement team takes third in competition


University of Nevada, Reno students took third place Friday at the American Advertising Federation’s Student Advertising Competition. The tournament, which was held at the University of California, Berkeley, is an annual event that asks participants to create an advertising campaign and present to a panel of judges. UNR has a history of victories in the competition, taking first place in 2003, and sixth and seventh in years prior. The University of California, Berkeley took first followed by Chico State, who took second.

Volunteer rates increase with unemployment


Each week, University of Nevada, Reno student Richard Wood escapes his daily routine of work and school to move pieces across a game board at Sierra Vista Elementary School. For the Ph.D. student, it’s just an hour per week, but for his fourth grade “little brother” it’s more.

UNR stops funding free bus


The Sierra Spirit, a free bus route, could stop running after the University of Nevada, Reno has decided to stop paying its contribution to the service when the contract is up in June, Provost Marc Johnson said.

Reilly looks at slashing Insight

Cadet program compliments Campus Escort


A new student cadet program offers extra escort services on campus as well as another set of eyes for university police, Adam Garcia, director of the University of Nevada, Reno Police Department, said. The police department implemented the program, which employs about 15 students, as an additional safety measure.

Sober drivers to earn rewards


A program rewarding students who serve as designated drivers began Thursday and will continue through the semester. Many community organizations involved in personal safety are stepping up their efforts this month to increase awareness of the extremely common crime of sexual assault. April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, is designed to raise awareness of the issue of sexual assault in order to prevent attacks and create more accessible resources for victims.
