ELKO – The Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents voted to allow the University of Nevada, Reno to seek an $11.2 million commercial loan to fund a medical education learning lab to be built on campus at their meeting Thursday. Gibbons defends higher education cuts in podcast address


Gov. Jim Gibbons criticized the Nevada System of Higher Education in a podcast Wednesday, saying its leaders show a “lack of cooperation,” making it difficult for the state to move forward with the budget cut process. Regents approve plans to pay $39 mil. debt


LAS VEGAS — The Fire Science Academy, a Carlin-based facility with a $39 million debt, will remain open for at least another two years. The Board of Regents voted 11-2 Friday to accept the University of Nevada, Reno's new debt-consolidation plan, which includes donations and the government purchase of the facility for National Guard use.

Regents to discuss budget, food venues


The Board of Regents will discuss a variety of topics at its meeting this week, including budget cuts, the Fire Science Academy debt and new food venues in the Joe Crowley Student Union. The board will meet Thursday and Friday at the College of Southern Nevada, Charleston Campus in Las Vegas. First on the agenda is the Nevada System of Higher Education biennial budget — a discussion the regents postponed at their past two meetings. The board was holding off on budget discussions until Gov. Jim Gibbons issued a formal propsal, regents said at past meetings.

Regents spare UNR from $2 mil cut


Money will now be given to Nevada System of Higher Education institutions based on current enrollment numbers, instead of using three-year enrollment averages. The reorganization means UNR will have to cut about $22 million from next year's budget instead of almost $24 million under the old formula.
