Heading into the Western Athletic Conference Tournament last week in Fresno, Calif., the men’s and women’s tennis teams had a golden opportunity. Both were riding win streaks of at least three matches and had some momentum going. With head coach Sylvan Malroux coaching both the men’s and women’s teams after former men’s coach Chad Stoloff resigned, the tournament could have been the feel-good story of the tennis season.

There is a very serious problem affecting Nevada’s sports teams. No, it’s not the lack of attendance. Nor is it the teams’ struggling to take the next step to become contenders. This problem is much worse. It’s the coaches, and more specifically the reason why coaches seem to be leaving.

A mixture of inexperience and close losses plagued the Wolf Pack men’s tennis team in 2008, but that hasn’t happened in 2009.
“They’re fearless out there and they’re going after it,” Nevada tennis head coach Chad Stoloff said. “They’re playing to win instead of hoping to win or playing not to lose.”
