New fees proposed in eight-year ASUN plan


More than half of a new $75 fee would go toward services already offered by the student government if a eight-year plan for the future is followed directly.

Student gov’t ready to hit the ground running

Reilly releases budget, senators take oath


Student Body President Eli Reilly released his executive budget and planned cabinet nominations for the 2009-10 academic year Wednesday. Included in the budget is a reduction to the funding for Insight Magazine, however not enough to force the publication online-only. The money to keep Insight came from a $7,000 error in an early draft of the budget's original estimation of the executive budget as well as other areas where Reilly “was able to shave some things off.”

Las Vegas students plan rally at legislature


Students from Nevada universities and colleges plan to gather Thursday to rally in Carson City against the proposed budget cuts. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the College of Southern Nevada and Nevada State College asked University of Nevada, Reno students to participate in an e-mail from Michael Flores.

ASUN fights cuts, gives up platforms


After Governor Jim Gibbon's proposed 49 percent cut from the University of Nevada, Reno, student government officials said their attention was turned to fighting the budget cuts. With the budget taking an unexpected priority, officials said some of their platform points were unmet due to a lack of time and money.

Senate faces 11 judicial charges


A student filed 11 charges with the judicial council after finding technical errors in various bills passed by the student senate this semester. Corinna Cohn filed the charges under seal, meaning they are inaccessible to the public.

Reilly focuses on a different crowd


Although his first term was dedicated to traditional students, President Eli Reilly said if reelected, he will fight to keep tuition low and endorse financial help for nontraditional and low-income students.

Student senate appoints secretary


The student senate unanimously appointed Alejandra Reyes as the new secretary at its weekly meeting Wednesday. The senate has been operating without an official secretary since Caitlin Gunn resigned in October. The appointment comes after the student government found itself operating illegally because the senate did not present 11 bills passed since April to the president. Reilly was presented one bill last week, a revised version of the judicial council code passed in December, which he signed into law Friday. As of Monday evening, Reilly had not been presented any of the other 10 bills which authorize the spending of more than $100,000 of student money.

Campus Escort money cut, ASUN may pick up slack


If the student government doesn’t spend about $72,000 to pay for Campus Escort next year, the program could be cut, university officials said. Board looks to save tutors


Additional course fees and student tutors are among the options to bring back the Math and Writing centers, student body president Eli Reilly said. A committee to reinstate the centers, which started in December, is scheduled to present different solutions to Provost Marc Johnson in May. Students enrolled in 100-level English and math classes, however, will still be eligible for tutoring next fall. All 100-level math courses will charge a $15 course fee starting in the fall, giving students access to the Math Center for the semester. Students in 100-level English courses will have free access to writing tutors.
