La búsqueda infinita del pago: Por qué la Generación Z nunca será propietaria de nada

La propiedad fue una vez la piedra angular del sueño americano: una casa con una cerca de madera blanca, un carro completamente pagado y una biblioteca llena de libros que podías sostener y marcar con notas. Para la Generación Z, ese sueño se nos escapa de las manos como la arena y, en su lugar, nos quedan las suscripciones, las cuotas de renta y los pagos infinitos mensuales.  

Hemos entrado en una era en la que nunca seremos realmente dueños de nada, ni siquiera de los medios que consumimos. Pensemos en los servicios de streaming: cada mes, pagamos dinero a servicios como Netflix, Spotify y Disney+. ¿Para qué? ¿Acceso temporal a un catálogo rotativo de contenidos? Un día, tu programa favorito desaparece porque expira un acuerdo de licencia y no puedes descargarlo y conservarlo. Es entretenimiento rentados y nada más. Todo nuestro mundo existe atrás de una pared de pagos. 

Lo mismo ocurre con la música. En generaciones anteriores, la gente construía colecciones de discos de vinilo, casetes y CD. Hoy en día, Spotify tiene nuestras bibliotecas como rehén y, si cancelamos nuestra suscripción, nuestro acceso desaparecerá de la noche a la mañana. Tenemos listas de reproducción digitales sin álbumes físicos, lo que nos obliga a pagar indefinidamente por acceder a canciones que nunca poseeremos realmente.

Hasta los carros se están convirtiendo en posesiones temporales. El aumento de los servicios de suscripción y alquiler de autos refleja la creciente incapacidad para permitirse la compra directa. Muchos de nosotros utilizamos aplicaciones de transporte compartido como Uber y Lyft, lo que significa que no tenemos carros. Pagamos por ir del punto A al punto B sin tener que recoger las llaves.  

Esta forma de vida basada en la suscripción se está extendiendo a todos los rincones de nuestras vidas. ¿Quieres hacer ejercicio? Pagas mensualmente por el acceso al gimnasio o por una suscripción a Peloton. ¿Quieres un armario de diseño? Los servicios de ropa por suscripción te rentan conjuntos de moda a cambio de una cuota. Hasta el software ya no es nuestro. Programas como Adobe y Microsoft requieren suscripciones continuas. Pagamos constantemente por funcionar en un mundo digital.  

Algunos dirán que estamos en la edad de oro de la comodidad. ¿Por qué molestarse en comprar DVD o CD si se puede escuchar todo en streaming? ¿Por qué asumir la responsabilidad de ser propietario de una casa cuando puedes moverte libremente como arrendatario? Esta supuesta comodidad oculta la cruda realidad de que nos estamos convirtiendo en una generación de arrendatarios, en vez de propietarios.  

Estamos amarrados a pagos sin fin para acceder a experiencias temporales y las implicaciones de esto son profundas. Sin propiedad, no hay estabilidad. No podemos crear riqueza a través de la propiedad o transmitir colecciones e inversiones. Nuestros activos sólo existen en el éter digital, manejados por empresas que pueden revocar el acceso en cualquier momento. Es una existencia precaria que nos hace vulnerables a los cambios económicos y al aumento de los costes.  

Ante esta realidad, ¿qué podemos hacer? Es hora de reimaginar la propiedad en el siglo XXI y nuestra solución pasa por los colectivos digitales, las cooperativas de viviendas y las nuevas formas de inversión que dan prioridad a la estabilidad antes que a las comisiones interminables. Vamos a oponernos a la idea de que la comodidad merece el sacrificio del control y la seguridad.  

El cambio no se produce de la noche a la mañana y, mientras tanto, la Generación Z seguirá pagando a un sistema diseñado para que sigamos consumiendo sin llegar a poseer. Esta es nuestra  búsqueda infinita del pago, un ciclo que tenemos la responsabilidad de romper.

Ally Ibarra-Soltero: Ally Ibarra-Soltero is the 2026-2027 Broadcast Director. She is a junior at the University of Nevada, Reno, majoring in New, Broadcast and Documentary with a minor in Atmospheric Science. She’s interned with KOLO 8 News Now, KUNR Public Radio and currently Renoticias. As the first Sagebrush Broadcast Director, she’s excited to create a program that continues for years to come. She hopes to inspire students to get more involved with news and chase after their dreams.

Jordan Katz is the 2026-27 Digital Media and Outreach Coordinator. She is a junior at the University of Nevada, majoring in Business Marketing and Management. On campus, Jordan is the Digital Media & Outreach Manager for the Nevada Sagebrush and is the founder of the Nevada Women’s Flag Football Club. She also works as a Biz-Fit Mentor for the College of Business, helping new students transition into life at UNR. Outside the Sagebrush, Jordan has worked in social media and digital strategy for local businesses and student groups, experiences that continue to shape her passion for storytelling and community-centered work. She hopes to keep growing in the world of marketing and media.
