After being dormant for nearly a decade, Nevada’s waterski team is resurfacing.
Taylor Price, the president of the UNR Waterski and Wakeboard club, brought this once-forgotten club back to life.
“I started the club when I transferred to UNR fall of 2025, so I’ve been on the team and serving as president since then,” Price said. “Technically we had a team around 2016, but it hasn’t been active since.”
In just one year, the club has gained multiple new members and competed in several tournaments around the West Coast.
“Waterski tournaments have three events: slalom, trick and jump,” Price said “All are done on different skis and judged differently.”
Though each skier has their favorite, the team is encouraged to compete in every event. Each skier is scored individually and then all individual scores are added up to create a team total.
The team recently just wrapped up their third tournament of the fall season hosted by Arizona State University (ASU).
Waterski is broken up into two seasons over the school year; the fall season takes place from September to mid-October and the spring season takes place from April to mid-May.
Last spring, sophomore Jack Joiner and Price were selected to compete in the All Stars on the West Coast Team. Price was chosen to compete in all three events and Joiner competed in two.
Price says that the waterski community is extremely welcoming and supportive.
“I love that even though it’s an individual sport and it ends up being you versus you on the water, you have a whole team supporting you,” Price said, “and other teams will celebrate your wins no matter how big or small.”
Tournaments give athletes the opportunity to not only hone their skills but also to build connections with the opposing teams.
“I have a ton of friends on other teams, like Chico, WWU, UC Davis, SDSU, ASU…they all come together to support everyone at these tournaments,” Price said. “Even though we’re on different teams.”
The club has also introduced wakeboarding this season, with their first wakeboarding tournament in November.
The club is always looking for new members, and no experience is required.
“We are open to any and all skill levels,” Price said. “We want everyone to have the opportunity to get onto the water and try it.”
