NOTICIAS DE ÚLTIMA HORA: La policía responde al engaño de “Swatting” en la Universidad de Nevada, Reno

Alrededor de 20 coches de policía y SWAT estuvieron presentes en el extremo norte de la Universidad de Nevada, campus de Reno el 9 de abril alrededor de las 8:40 p.m.  
Según Joshua Reynolds, subdirector del departamento de policía de la Universidad de Nevada, Reno, estaban respondiendo a una “amenaza potencial” en el campus que fue descartada como un “engaño”. 

“Recibimos información esta noche sobre una amenaza potencial para el campus y, debido a una gran precaución, hubo una gran presencia policial”, dijo Reynolds en una correspondencia por correo electrónico. “Los oficiales fueron capaces de determinar con bastante rapidez que no había una amenaza real en el campus y esto fue el resultado de un engaño”. 

Reynolds agregó que el campus es seguro. 

Actualización a partir del 10 de abril,  

El departamento de policía de la Universidad de Nevada, Reno publicó una actualización en su Instagram diciendo que el incidente se debió a un engaño “swatting”.  
“Este incidente ha sido confirmado como un engaño de “swatting” y no hay amenaza para el campus en este momento”, dijo la publicación de Instagram.

Según la publicación del departamento de policía de la Universidad de Nevada, Reno, el “swatting” ocurre cuando los “swatters” llaman a las líneas de emergencia y reclaman incidentes como tiroteos activos o una situación de secuestros. Esto atrae una gran presencia policial, como la que se encuentra en el campus este domingo, a la escena de un incidente falso.  

El “swatting” ha ganado conciencia en los últimos años, y ha afectado a muchos otros campus universitarios como la Universidad de Harvard, la Universidad de Oklahoma y la Universidad de Boston. El “swatting” se considera un delito.

Brian Sandoval, presidente de la Universidad de Nevada, Reno, emitió una declaración sobre el incidente aclarando aún más los detalles. 

“Aproximadamente a las 8:24 p.m. del domingo 9 de abril, la policía universitaria recibió una llamada alegando que había un tiroteo activo en el patio cuadrangular”, dijo el comunicado. “Los servicios de policía universitarios se movilizaron y respondieron con varias agencias de servicios de emergencias en la comunidad”. 

La declaración fue para afirmar que el incidente se debió a el “swatting” que llevó a la presencia de la policía; sin embargo, el área fue despejada en 15 minutos.  
 
“Como recordatorio, el departamento de policía de la universidad ofrece entrenamiento activa para agresores durante todo el año a nuestros profesores, personal y estudiantes”, dijo la declaración. “La seguridad es nuestra principal prioridad y motivamos a los miembros de nuestra comunidad a comprender las acciones que pueden tomar para garantizar la seguridad personal”.
