SENADO 12/6: Respuesta del Senado al Tiroteo en UNLV, Renuncias de Senadores y Aprobación de Proyecto de Ley Electoral

Los estudiantes asociados en la Universidad de Nevada, Reno (UNR) empezaron su junta el 6 de diciembre con el reconocimiento del tiroteo reciente en la Universidad de Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).  

“Nos solidarizamos con las víctimas, sus familias, y todos los afectados por este acto de violencia sin sentido”, dice Fayza Salah, la oradora de los estudiantes asociados de la universidad. “En tiempos como estos, es importante que todos nos juntemos con solidaridad y expresemos nuestro apoyo por ellos que están sufriendo”.

El espacio luego tuvo un momento de silencio para la comunidad de UNLV. 

Eric James, el comisario de UNR, además dieron un comentario público para hacer acordar a UNR de la seguridad de sus estudiantes en campus y solo adquirir su información de ​​fuentes confiables y acreditadas sobre el tiroteo. 

“Solo quiero que todos sepan que estamos haciendo nuestra parte aquí arriba”, dijo James. “Siempre estamos aquí para ti pase lo que pase… Es un día increíblemente trágico y eso es algo terrible por lo que nunca deberíamos tener que pasar”.

Heather Brown, miembro de la Junta de Regentes del Sistema de Educación Superior de Nevada (NSHE)  y ex alumno de UNLV, hizo un comentario en el “desconecto grande” entre los estudiantes y el Junta de Regentes de NSHE y como ella quiere ser más accesibles para los estudiantes. En cambio, se refirió al tiroteo, empezando a llorar por el emotivo día.

“Estoy seguro de que ustedes sepan..que tuvimos algunas perdidas hoy”, dijo Brown con su voz quebrada. “Y lo siento porque esos son nuestros estudiantes… Me importa y quiero que sepas que mi puerta está siempre abierta… las universidades deben ser un lugar seguro para nosotros. Quiero que la gente pueda sentirse cómoda estando en el campus y quiero que nos unamos”.

Ally Chavez, la secretaria del senado, habló como un estudiante criticando los senados por esta vía Zoom durante esta crisis. 

“Es muy triste… y yo supe que tuve que estar aquí, porque al fin del día, si nadie estaba, los estudiantes se sentirían solitarios”, dijo Chavez. “Aprecio cada senado que está aquí porque están mostrando a los estudiantes que están aquí para apoyarlos. A los que están vía Zoom, no creo que ustedes estén presentes al fin del día porque es un momento sombrío para muchos estudiantes que estén asustados …. Estar aquí en general ayudará a la gente a sentirse más cómodos”. 

Después de los comentarios de UNLV, ningún oficial de los estudiantes asociados dieron reportes.

Un proyecto de ley que reforma los procesos electorales de los estudiantes asociados durante las elecciones del semestre de primavera fue acelerado y aprobado. El proceso acelerado fue requerido para aprobar la legislación antes del inicio de la temporada electoral en el semestre de la primavera de 2024. 

Renuncia del Senador

Alyah Raygoza, senadora de la escuela de salud pública, envió formalmente su carta de renuncia al senado.

Erin Shaffer, senadora del colegio de artes liberales, dijo a la mesa que estaba renunciando formalmente ya que estaba aceptando otro trabajo.
